How to Foster
Foster Us
"Speaking for those who can't"

Most of the horses that we Foster are from a Sheriff's Office seizure. They are under the control of the Linn County Sheriff's
Office Livestock Investigation Team and Linn County Animal Rescue. There is a Foster Application to fill out to be put on the
Foster list, and also a Background Check by the Sheriff's Office, followed by a property inspection so that we can see the
type of equine you can take. There is no fee to apply. Once on the list it is just a matter of time till a Sheriff's Office seizure
will have a need for more Foster homes. The length of time a horses needs to stay in the Foster home will depend on if the
person signs them over right away or if they chose to go to court. That can take several months, the application lists the
specific rules that apply.

A rescued or seized horse is usually starved, full of worms, and parasites. They need special care and feed. LCAR will help
with guidelines for each horse with feed, handling, foot care, etc. When a person Fosters a horse the expenses are their
responsibility, they need to keep accurate records and receipts so the records can be turned over to the attorney if the case
goes to court.

The Foster home for a seized horse lasts until the court case is resolved or the person signs the ownership of the animal
over. At that time the Foster person will get together with LCAR and talk about if the person wants to adopt the horse, or if not
the horse goes back to LCAR to be adopted. (Note: There is an adoption fee)

Temporary Foster

Sometimes we have a horse that was just rescued and need a temporary place for it to stay until we can make other
arrangements. This might be a horse that has been voluntary surrendered and needs to be moved. This may be a horse that
has not been evaluated yet or has a special need. This requires the same application, background check, and information as
for a seized horse, but the stay would be temporary.

LCAR likes to keep a horse for a least 3 months after rescue to give time to evaluate and give it a good start on a recovery
before it would be adoptable.
Usually we do not Foster horses that are adoptable.
